Can I Hang Art in the Bathroom?

If you thumb through any magazine about home décor or renovation, you’ll inevitably see a picture of a bathroom complete with a nice piece of artwork or two. If your first thought is “What about the humidity?” you’re right to call foul. The extra moisture in bathrooms is going to eventually ruin many types of art that you might like to have in the bathroom. However, that doesn’t mean you have to suffer with bare walls.

Can I Hang Art in the Bathroom?

One of the problems with the humidity in the bathroom is that if you have a paper-based art piece, there is a good likelihood that mold will grow on it or the artwork will warp. That said, you definitely do not want to hang something that is limited edition, vintage, or a valuable piece. An option is to have it duplicated in some manner so that you have an inexpensive copy you don’t mind replacing whenever it has become affected.

Another option for those bathroom walls is a canvas print that has a special coating on it to keep moisture from affecting it. If you do have some artwork you love, have a photo taken of it that can be printed onto canvas for use in the bathroom. Photos can also be printed onto metal, which is another good choice, as the aluminum won’t warp or rust and won’t grow mold.

Venting your bathroom will go a long way to keeping mold from damaging your bathroom art, but if that isn’t possible or you have family members who like to turn the bathroom into a spa despite the fan, taking the precaution of hanging art pieces that are either inexpensive and replaceable or can withstand the humidity is important.
