The more you know about what goes into personalized custom frames, the more you will appreciate the time, effort and quality we put into every archival framing project that comes through our doors. We’ve provided some answers to the frequently asked questions we receive about custom frames:
How does Frameworks’ museum-quality framing compare in price to other framers?
There are so many options with custom frames that rarely will you be able to compare apples to apples. We use the same basic guidelines as most other framers, and our prices will be similar; however, we feel it our responsibility to show you quality archival framing, using conservation materials that may cost more than if you framed an item somewhere else.
Can a metal or wood frame be too large or too small for a piece of art?
Frame size is determined as much by the subject and style of a piece of art as it is by the size. Coloration and finish of a frame can be more powerful visually than size. As you look through samples of custom frame options, you will see when a certain size begins to feel comfortable.
What is the difference between metal leaf and gold leaf?
Gold leaf is almost pure (22k) gold, while metal leaf has no gold content. Gold is forever! Yes, it costs more, but not significantly, and the color won’t change. Gold, even gold that is heavily antiqued, has a wonderful, soft brilliance that is unmistakable.
Why do hand-framed items cost more?
The question answers itself. These custom frames are actually built of raw wood before any finishing or carving is done. All of the carving and finishing is done in stages that often take days or even weeks, and yes, everything is completed by hand.
